Our origins

ImgCat was born because of the enshittification of the web. Social media used to connect folks in new and interesting ways. But over time, we stopped being the users, and became the product for marketing and business partners.

We don't like ads, but they're not toxic. The problem is algorithms designed to keep us engaged for as long as possible. We stopped connecting to each other, and are served whatever keeps us engaged, watching ads.

This is toxic by design. And we've had enough.

Our solution

The solution isn't a new social media platform. We've seen new companies grow and sell-out. It requires a new business model, with different financial incentives.

ImgCat is a nonprofit foundation. We don't have shareholders or quarterly profits. We can build a platform without engagement algorithms, dark patterns, or toxicity. You are our only focus, not marketing companies.

Our platform is open-source. Anybody can download and run the entire tech stack. This keeps us honest today, tomorrow, and forever. We exist because of the community's trust and support.
